How Medallia Scaled Employee Referrals by 5X
Founded in 2001, Medallia enables companies to capture real-time customer feedback across the web, social, and mobile channels.
The Business Challenge
As Medallia reached 1,000 employees, Mike Podobnik (Head of Global Talent Acquisition) knew that their recruiting process had to transition from growth to scale. To maintain Medallia’s high rate of employee referrals, strong company culture, and to build their diversity, things had to change. New processes and technology had to be put in place to fit their size and take Medallia from hyper-growth to scalability.
Historically, a hyper-engaged group of employees were driving Medallia’s referral program, but as Medallia continued to grow, Mike needed a way to enlist and inspire new hires to participate. Mike needed a way to reach and engage employees across the much larger organization as well as re-engage those who were most active in the past.
Taking into account Medallia’s size, Mike wanted to ensure that the employee referral program was seamless and didn’t put an undue burden on employees or the recruiting team. At the same time, it was important to maintain a high-bar for referred candidates at scale to ensure that employee referrals remained a high-quality source of hires for Medallia.
How Teamable Helped
When Medallia’s recruiting team rolled out Teamable across the company they were struck by the effectiveness and adoption rates. Within 6-months, 75 percent of employees across the organization were using the tool to connect their social networks and refer candidates. Medallia’s referral program is incentivized through gamification that offers employees unique company rewards. For Mike, this was a huge achievement as it meant that the strong employee culture that defined Medallia’s hyper-growth was being adopted by new employees.
The high employee engagement gave Medallia’s recruiting team a dynamic and diverse pool from which to source candidates for open requisitions.
“We were looking for a way to increase participation across the company to drive referrals,” said Mike Podobnik. “Having a better view into diverse candidates was incredibly important for us.”
Teamable’s recommendation engine was able to accurately identify qualified candidates by region for open requisitions. The referral view lifted the burden of identifying top-quality candidates from employees and allowed recruiters to make targeted asks for warm introductions.
At 1,000 employees you can’t send company-wide emails asking people to refer candidates. With Teamable we were able to identify the most critical hires and source the best referrals in our employees’ networks.–Mike Podobnik, Head of Global Talent Acquisition
“Teamable allowed us to unlock scale,” said Mike Podobnik. “At 1,000 employees you can’t send company-wide emails asking people to refer candidates. With Teamable we were able to identify the most critical hires and source the best referrals in our employees’ networks.”
6 months after the Teamable implementation, Medallia had made 63 Teamable-sourced hires and 700 qualified referral candidates in their pipeline, while reducing cost per hire by 15%.
